After addressing a lifetime of digestive issues by adopting a paleo diet 6 years ago, I very shortly thereafter began suffering from a severe hormonal imbalance that manifested itself in painful and embarrassing hormonal acne. For 5 years I struggled with mild to moderate acne that eventually became cystic, without ever knowing the cause.
Although I was eating a clean, whole food diet, my acne persisted. After eliminating multiple food groups with no success, blaming my self and refusing to leave the house, I was at my wit’s end. I told myself in the summer of 2015 that if I couldn’t figure out what was going on, I would go on Accutane. As someone that has always lived a very holistic lifestyle, this would have been a huge sacrifice for me.
Last summer I embarked on a journey to not just identify my issues as hormonal, but also work to naturally heal my hormonal imbalance and my acne. One year later and I am beyond thrilled to say that it worked. Although I am still on the journey to achieving completely healthy skin, I have no doubt made some very impressive and noticeable progress. The basis of what I’ve done to address my acne is threefold.
- I addressed the root cause of my issues, a hormonal imbalance, and worked to re-train my bodiy’s hormones to function normally.
- I prioritized my gut health and supported my detox pathways to eliminate toxins like zenoestrogens and phytoestrogens. These are chemicals present in our environment and in our food that mimic natural estrogens and cause an imbalance in normal hormonal activity.
- I completely deconstructed my skincare routine, simplified the process and decreased the amount of products I use overall.
To fully explain the three strategies above, I decided to record a few videos as I felt it was the best way to fully explain my strategy and protocol. The first video covers #3 from the above list and talks about all of my topical treatments. The second video addresses #1 & #2, which were by far the most important strategies in healing overall. After addressing my hormonal imbalance and healing my acne over the past year, there was still one remaining gap in my holistic lifestyle that always made me uncomfortable.
Here I was ensuring that everything in my household was clean and free of harmful toxins, especially those that might contain endocrine disrupters or anything that might mimic estrogens in my body. However, despite being so careful in those areas, day in and day out, I was still applying chemical-laden toxic makeup to my face.
Initially I told myself that I needed conventional makeup to cover up my acne. Although I had never tried the alternative, I was convinced non-toxic makeup wouldn’t cut it. The other thing that stopped me from making the switch to all-natural makeup was that I didn’t know where to start. Not only was I unsure of what store carried non-toxic makeup, I was getting such mixed information about which brands were actually non-toxic.
On top of that, especially when my acne was at its worst, I was absolutely horrified to walk into any makeup store because I knew that all eyes would be on my face and that made me feel extremely uncomfortable and insecure. My wish had always been that I could find a one-stop shop for non-toxic makeup and that preferably, I could find it all online in one place, without having to try and decipher labels and figure out which brands were safe.
I had heard a lot of my friends in the holistic world talking about this company and to be honest, I didn’t pay much attention. I felt that my excuses for continuing to use toxic makeup were well founded and I could always tell myself “Well, I just bought new makeup!” as an excuse not to check it out.
However, after hearing so many women’s positive experiences with Beautycounter products, it was eventually hard to ignore. I told myself that I would order a few things just to test them out, but that if I didn’t like them, I would return to my conventional products.
Not only do I LOVE all of the products I’ve tried, but I’ve also learned so much about conventional skincare and makeup that I am positive I could never go back.
Here are just a few of the many reasons I have fallen in love with Beautycounter and why I am happy to be not just a customer of theirs, but a consultant helping to inspire other women to ditch their toxic products and educate the masses on safer choices.
Throughout my journey healing my acne, I had limited all of the endocrine disrupters and xenoestrogens in my immediate environment, which you can learn more about in the videos and linked posts above. Of course what I wasn’t eliminating were the toxins and xenoestrogens I was applying directly to my face. Looking back, I wonder how much faster my acne might have healed had I made this change sooner.
Leading the change for safer choices is not easy, fast or cheap, but I am more than happy to support Beautycounter every step of the way.
