In January we often talk about ways we can detox our bodies through food and exercise, but we don’t often consider the toxins in our home or that we put on our bodies. Although cleaning out our pantries and diets is critical to maintaining overall health and wellness, the products in our home are equally if not more important. Why? Because although we may often forget, our skin is our largest organ. While the food we eat needs to first digest before permeating into our bodies, the products we use that touch our skin (think moisturizers, makeup, cleaning products, etc.) are absorbed directly into our bloodstream. Scary, huh?
With known carcinogens, endocrine disrupters (chemicals that affect our hormonal balance) and so many other toxic chemicals companies aren’t even forced to disclose, we are doing ourselves and our families a disservice by solely focusing on food and not considering our overall environment.
This January, I want to give each and every one of you the opportunity to learn a bit more about some of my favorite non-toxic home and body products, plus enter for your chance to win a whole box full of them! So without further ado, here are my some of my favorite brands and products!
Acure
Acure is a relatively new find for me. In particular, I love their hair products, body wash and their Radical Resurfacing Treatment that I use as a part of my topical skincare routine for hormonal acne. Their shampoo, conditioner and body wash are super creamy and thick, unlike a lot of other natural brands I’ve tried. Not only that, but because they are so rich and creamy they end up lasting a long time without me having to go through excess amounts of product.
Primal Pit Paste
This is my all-time favorite natural deodorant. They started out with little jars of deodorant that you had to apply by hand, but now they make stick deodorants which I’m a lot more comfortable with. So few natural deodorants do what they’re supposed to, but these completely work and come in a variety of great scents. They other thing I love about this product is the tube itself. I have struggled so much with traditional deodorant sticks and the mess that’s created by some of the deodorant making it’s way to the outside of the cover when I close it. I know this probably sounds confusing to some of you, but if you’ve ever experienced this problem, I am sure you know what I mean. I have never experienced any leakage with this stick and am super happy about that. Plus, they now have a body powder which is talc-free. Talc is present in most conventional body powders and is a carcinogen, which is never something you want to be applying to your skin.
Earthpaste
There are certainly a ton of “natural” toothpastes out there, but none with as few ingredients as Earthpaste. Turn over the tube or package of any of your favorite non-toxic toothpaste and I guarantee you will still see a long list of ingredients you don’t recognize. Earthpaste makes the toothpaste game super simple. All that’s in the tube is Redmond clay, purified water, xylitol (for natural sweetness) and essential oils. Sure, it might be off-putting at first to brush with toothpaste that isn’t white, but you definitely get used to it. Nothing makes me happier than knowing exactly what’s in the products I’m putting into my body and toothpaste is no exception.
Beautycounter
It’s no secret that Beautycounter is one of my all-time favorite non-toxic companies. After years and years of avoiding making the switch to non-toxic makeup, I finally took the plunge when Beautycounter educated me about how dangerous conventional cosmetics really are. Not only do they make amazing, high-performing makeup but their skincare is hard to beat. Alitura
Alitura’s face mask made a huge difference for me when I was battling hormonal acne and it’s still a product I use regularly. During the five years that I spent dealing with skin issues, I learned that traditional forms of exfoliation (harsh scrubs) can be extremely damaging for already damaged skin. However, exfoliating is still important so thankfully, there is another option! I use a combination of Alitura and Papaya extract to exfoliate my skin with enzymes instead of harsh scrubs. Learn more about how I use this mask and what I put in it here.
Dr. Bronner’s
Dr. Bronner’s is made with not only organic ingredients, but they’re all fair trade as well. The company has been around for generations and has done so much when it comes to fighting for sustainability and whole, unprocessed products. Although there isn’t one of their products I don’t love, I use their Sal Suds as a household cleaner and their pump soaps constantly. Conventional household cleaners contain a long list of toxins and considering we are putting them all over our household surfaces, including those we eat off of, this fact can be pretty scary. Same goes for the soap we clean our hands with… with Dr. Bronner’s you can be sure you are not only buying something that’s good for your health, but also for the environment.
